RIUH Talks: Creating A Memorable Brand

In a time when new businesses seem to be popping up everywhere, our fourth edition of RIUH Talks is all about creating a memorable brand. In the wake of Covid-19, more people are starting up their side hustles, turning hobbies into businesses, and building brands out of their homes. In these trying times, how does a brand stand out? Well, we’re going to be speaking with 6 amazing guest speakers who have experience in exactly that.

Brand identity, brand experience and curated content, all contribute towards how a consumer views and engages with a brand. Through 6 quick 20 minute sessions with the founders of some of our most beloved brands, we will learn a little more about the importance of creating a consistent brand experience for your customers and audience.

From skincare and loungewear to planners and mooncakes, Chuck’s puts their own unique, well-designed twist to everything they do– keeping us on our toes to see what they come up with next! This lifestyle brand, founded by Jane Chuck, who started off as a blogger, now, social media influencer and entrepreneur, works with some of the best creatives in town to come up with quirky and relatable content and products that make you want to click ‘add to cart’ almost immediately.

It’s a gift emporium, a teatime session at your grandma’s living room, a museum of small things and most recently, it took on a role as a daycare for flowers. The ever-changing themes make Snackfood a celebrated destination as shoppers around the world come to experience its hospitality that is unique in the retail industry. It has put Malaysia retail on the map as one of the top concept stores in the world by CNN Travel. After 10 years , Snackfood is bound for a grander change. It closed its operation recently, and the founder is on sabbatical to reimagine retailing in the new normal.

Phil’s Pizza
Phil’s Pizza is the new kid on the block in Telawi, Bangsar. They opened their physical storefront post-MCO, in a time where many were closing their doors. Its founders, Sara and Phillip, carried out their brainstorming, research and development during the Movement Control Order, pulling together the planning, costing, renovating, branding and everything else in just 15 days! Their hope is that it can be a platform for all creatives, aiming to collaborate as much as possible with local talent! Not to mention, they serve up incredible New York style Pizza slices and homemade sodas in a comfy, casual and fun setting.

Inside Scoop
Inside Scoop started as a dream to make genuinely fresh ice cream for Malaysians. The brainchild of Edmund Tan and his wife, Lim Shiew Li, Inside Scoop was inspired by their love for ice cream and for wanting to create happy memories. Noticing a gap in the premium ice cream market where it was predominantly served by international chains, they set out to make great ice cream that is made fresh locally, creating imitable natural flavours and smooth, ultra-creamy textures unlike mass produced ones. They were guided by the philosophy of using high quality ingredients sourced from the world over and inspired by their Malaysian taste buds, eating exploration, travels and current trends.

Hanya creates clothing for all women. In the sea of social media content, their campaigns shine through as being thoughtful and community-driven. Their #SomeGirls campaign celebrates the diversity of women from all walks of life, with relatable content that uplifts their audience. Their most recent campaign #HanyaUpcycles, is all about giving their collections with a low sell-through-rate (STR) a second life, reducing their textile waste. Their emphasis on understanding their audience’s wants and needs, as well as creating a community of like-minded women, helps keep their brand fresh and real.

Nikola Hassan
Nikola Hassan is a brand experience architect. As the managing director of Avant-X, a creative studio that specialises in brand consultancy, she is a self professed ‘branding geek’ and brand marketing expert.
